Night Shift is a project that looks at the lives and activities of all those who work between the hours of approximately 11:00pm and 6:00am, when the majority of a population is sleeping.

Night Shift looks at a broad spectrum of professions on a city-by-city basis, spanning the United States and selected international cities. A series of 45 minute programs is being produced.
Our first Night Shift city is San Francisco, California, where we will also cover activities in neighboring communities that are directly involved with San Francisco.

In pre-production as of January 2012.
Life at night takes on a different dimension which is hard to describe.

There is an element of mystery, furtiveness, and watchfulness, perhaps linked to core human instincts.
Night Shift raises awareness of all those jobs that take place while most of us are sleeping.

It is a fascinating look in to a parallel world that many will never see for themselves.
Shooting primarily at night has its technical challenges and aesthetic rewards.

Challenges include focusing, and constraints around the use of depth of field. Generally, the shutter will be wide open, or close to it, meaning that almost everything other that the subject will be out of focus. In many cases this is considered to be an appealing effect, but when almost every shot is similar, the range of the cinematographer's craft is limited.

Of course this can be overcome by adding artificial light sources, but that can impact the aesthetics. Careful use of minimal light does add an extra layer of compositional and exposure complexity but when everything comes together, some amazing, emotionally-charged shots can be captured.
